worked hard as an
Auctioneer and was
proud to have been a
founding member of the
state association. He
was proud of the progress
the association made over
the years to give Auctioneering a most professional
image. I am certain Mike's incredible range of
knowledge and his quest for perfection will inspire
all of us to continue in this great (and second
oldest) profession. Mike would have enjoyed
this very spirited and enthusiastic convention.
His spirit was with us all, thank-you for helping
to keep his memory alive.

HE CONVENTION was a great success,
a good time was had by all! Attendees
enjoyed the many opportunities forwarded to them.
Education, networking, golf tournament, bid
calling contest, ad contests, lots of fun and
laughter and more.
The event was sponsored by the Boston Globe
and held at the Sheraton Colonial in Wakefield,
MA, on May 4th & 5th, 2003.
The two day event consisted of the Bid Calling
Championship, Advertising and Media Contests,
Golf Tournament, Fun Auction, the first inductee
into the MSAA Hall of Fame, and seminars
presented by highly regarded professionals of the
Auction Industry.
Veteran Auctioneer Roy C. Burdick of Florida,
MA was crowned State Bid Calling Champion,
one of the most prestigious awards held by an auc-
tioneer, as they also assume the role of MSAA
Ambassador. Candidates are judged in two
major categories: the actual bid calling and an inter-
view process.
Among the criteria the candidates are judged
on are: bid calling, presentation, promptness
in selling, appearance, poise, chant, voice con-
trol, clarity, expression, effective Auctioneering,
handling of the audience, and in the interview
process presentation, response, and the content
of their answer as to why they would make a good
ambassador to the association.
Mr. Burdick is an award winning motiva-
tional speaker, salesperson, auctioneer, real estate
broker, fundraiser, evangelist, and singer. Due
to his expertise in the Auction industry he is sought
after as a consultant, workshop leader, and
speaker.
Jay Beard, President of Simon Hill & Associates,
of Shrewsbury, MA was awarded first runner up
in an extremely close competition for the Bid
Calling Championship.
Winners of the Advertising & Media contest
were: Marianne F. Sullivan, a 14-year veteran
of Paul E. Saperstein Co. Inc., Holbrook, MA,
for an exceptional Auction Brochure; Ron Bethel
of Certified Sales, Warwick, RI, for an impeccable
Company Web Site; and Dave Mendel of Aaron
Posnik & Co., Springfield, MA for outstanding
newspaper advertising.

seminar speakers
consisted of:
Attorney Doris
Bilodeau, CAI of South
Deerfield, MA who
did an informative and
educational presenta-
tion based on her
years of experience in
"Auction Law".
Susan Doyle, CAI of Pleasant Valley, NY, an
NAA director and life member, shared many
innovative ideas in the topic of "Networking"
Roger P. Durkin, MS, ASA of Boston, MA, a
renowned authority brought his extensive
knowledge and experience in the appraisal field
in his presentation "The Auctioneer as a
Professional Appraiser".
John Economou, CAI of LuJohn's Enterprises
Inc., President of the Association and convention
chairman stated, "We are very pleased with the
success of the convention and the upward growth
of our association. Auctioneers from the largest
Auction Company in the state to the one man
show were present. I encourage all MA Auctioneers
to join the MSAA for ample educational and net-
working opportunities in our industry."
Don't be left out again, plan to attend next year's
convention!! Everyone had a great time!!
Many commented on how great it was to see our
association grow and become more active.
The networking opportunities were abundant!
Ideas and suggestions were flowing everywhere.
