Auction of license plates
draws celebrities, raises funds
MSAA member auctioneer
Bill Firestone, of Enfield, CT,
held a special auction at famed
baseball stadium Fenway Park
in August just before a game was
played by the Boston Red Sox.
Auction attendees paid $250.00
to be at the Jimmy Fund Benefit auction in the
Player's Club of the stadium.
Massachusetts' state government donated six license
plates with numbers that are significant to Red Sox fans,
and many people traveled from the far corners of the
state just to get an opportunity to bid. Those not able
to attend in person placed their bids simultaneously
via the Internet through software provided by
LuJohn's Enterprises Inc., BidderCentral.com. Two
of the successful bidders were from the Internet.
Phillip H. Morse, Red Sox owner/partner, bought
the Ted Williams, #9 Massachusetts plate with a bid
of $140,000. Actor Ben Affleck, who was there to throw
out the first ball of the game, walked away with
Bobby Doerr's #1 license plate for $50,000.
Along with plates #5, #8, #27, and #406 the auc-
tion raised $233,000 for the Jimmy Fund/Dana
Farber Institute.
Bill Firestone, president of Capital Recovery Group,
LLC, a nationwide, industrial auction company, has
been holding auctions for over 25 years. "Since we have
the process in place, it became a great way for me to
give back to the community," said Firestone. Bill has
raised more than $1 million for the Jimmy Fund.

Nominate 2004 MSAA Hall of Fame Candidate
In order to recognize auctioneers who give their time and talent to promoting and
improving the auction profession, the Massachusetts Auctioneers Association
created the MSAA Hall of Fame Award. The award recognizes auction career
achievement and volunteer work for the MSAA, the NAA and the local commu-
nity. The primary qualification for consideration is continuous membership in the
Massachusetts Auctioneers Association for a minimum of ten years.
The career resumé of each nominee is reviewed for leadership in several areas; auc-
tioneer association, auction professionalism, community, government and business
activity, service club, school and church. A rating system uses points earned for improv-
ing the auction profession and activity at the national, state, and community levels.
For example, one year serving on the MSAA Board of Directors earns one point. Further
points are available if the nominee has chaired a national or state committee such
as Convention Chairman, has conducted seminars without payment or has held any
positions in NAA, Auction marketing Institute or the MSAA state association. Points
are also awarded for bringing new members into MSAA or NAA associations.
Nominees receive credit for serving their local community, county, city, state, and
nation. Included in this type of work are positions such as volunteer fireman, com-
mander of a veteran's organization, PTA President, church or synagogue board offi-
cer, civic clubs (Rotary, Lions etc.) hospital, city council, county commissioner, State
House of Representatives or Senate, or a national elected or appointed office.
